From rural Alabama, self-taught artist Thornton Dial is a keen observer of the human spectacle and its narratives of corruption and moral strength, folly and triumph. He has spent the last two decades exploring the truths of American history and culture in all its complexities and contradictions.
Over 40 of Dial’s large-scale paintings, drawings and found-object sculptures, including 25 new works, opens February 24 at the New Orleans Museum of Art.

The Forgotten Space, a film essay by Allan Sekula and Nöel Burch, describes the contemporary maritime world in relation to the complex symbolic legacy of the sea. The film is an expanded version of Sekula’s epic critique of global capitalism, the 1995 book and exhibition Fish Story. Sekula will present The Forgotten Space at 7pm on Monday, Feb. 13th at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
LearnToLive Exhibit Night, devised by Yanti Turang, Sergio Padilla and Jason Prowell has come about as a result of the August 2011 research expedition to North Sulawesi, Indonesia. The purpose of the expedition was to scout locations and establish foundations for, LearnToLive, a three-week traveling healthcare program.
The LearnToLive exhibit consists of three mediums: photography (Jason Prowell), a short film (Renso Amariz) and an interactive installation. The exhibition follows the research team as they travel through North Sulawesi, Indonesia, exploring the need for their proposed healthcare program. There will be a silent auction of the photographs to help raise funds for their upcoming trip.
The one-night-only exhibition takes place at Du Mois Gallery, located at 4921 Freret St, on Tuesday, February 7th from 6:00 until 10:00p.
NY-based Paul Ramirez Jonas creates artwork and sculpture to engage dialogue with audiences in public spaces. His latest piece, The Commons allows the viewer to engage a riderless cork monument, giving voice and publishing to anyone who wishes.
